Equilibrium is a fine example of a sleeper movie. When i prepared to watch it, all i knew was that it was some sort of a sci/fi flick, and to me the poster made me think "Matrix clone"
And then i watched it.
And then i watched it again.
The setting : a Post WW3 world called Librium, where all law-abiding citizens are forced to take a drug that represses emotion, twice a day. A world where feeling, emotion, art, music and the sorts are offenses punishable by death
Our hero is John Preston, a Cleric, which is an elite force of Law enforcement.
Clerics hunt down "Sense Offenders" which are basically anyone not taking their drugs.
But what happens when a Cleric accidentally forgets his daily dose?
Pros:
Christian Bale fits perfectly in his role, and the starring cast includes Emily Watson, Sean Bean and William Fichtner(Of Band of Brothers fame).. Casting alltogether is very good indeed.
My favorite touches to the movie was the martial arts the Clerics used, called "Gun-Kata". It's basically a martial art, with guns instead of punches and kicks.. Sounds gay? It sure as fuck doesnt look it. Some of the most excellently choreographed fight scenes i've ever seen are in this gem of a movie.
Cinematography, So sexy.
Cons:
With a small budget, the movie suffers at scenes with special fx, but how director Kurt Wimmer pulls off so much with so little money astounds me
Around 20% of the soundtrack irritated me.
VERDICT: 9.2/10
Best action movie i've seen this year! |
