BAGHDAD, Iraq — The United States has launched its opening attack against Iraq, smashing "targets of military opportunity" in a pre-dawn surgical missile strike after President Bush's deadline for Saddam Hussein to leave the country passed unheeded. Shortly after the missile attack, about 1,000 U.S. troops launched a raid in Afghanistan, seeking Al Qaeda terrorists, the U.S military said. The State Department issued a warning to all Americans to be on alert for an "increased potential for anti-American violence, including terrorist actions against U.S. citizens, as a result of thmilitary action in Iraq."

Sporadic explosions have been reported along the outskirts of Baghdad, and air raid sirens continue to blare in the city. There are reports of heavy artillery fire along the Iraq-Kuwait border. Missiles in the "double digits" were fired into Baghdad Thursday morning from a small number of ships in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, senior military officials told Fox News. One official said they were fired at "leadership targets," but he was not certain whether Saddam himself was a target.

At about 5:30 a.m., air sirens blared in the Iraqi capital and yellow and white anti-aircraft tracers streaked through the sky. A number of strong explosions could be heard. Most seemed to be at locations outside the city, but one was followed by a rising ball of fire toward the southern part of Baghdad. Frequent sonic booms and the sounds of aircraft could be heard in northern Iraq above the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdish autonomous enclave. The strikes were not the opening of the main air campaign but rather an attempt to take advantage of "time-sensitive" targets, meaning fresh intelligence on the whereabouts of Iraqi leaders, sources said.

The strikes included Tomahawk cruise missiles and precision-guided bombs dropped from F-117 Nighthawks, the Air Force's stealth fighter-bombers, military officials said. Soon after the predawn missile attack halfway across the world, President Bush addressed the nation from the Oval Office.

"This will not be a campaign of half measures and we will accept no outcome but victory," Bush said.

It was clear from Bush's words that the war to topple Saddam and eliminate his weapons of mass destruction had begun. Defiant to the end, Saddam's state-run television broadcast this message to the Americans after the bombs struck: "It's an inferno that awaits them. Let them try their faltering luck and they shall meet what awaits them."

Just outside Iraq, an American-led invasion force of 300,000 troops awaited the broader order to strike. Coalition forces massed in the Kuwaiti desert close to the Iraqi border, giant B-52 warplanes were loaded with bombs, and Tomahawk missile-carrying ships were in position, all awaiting the order to attack. Anti-aircraft tracer fire made arcs across the Baghdad sky as the American munitions bore in on their targets. A ball of fire shot skyward after one explosion.

Bush described the targets as being of "military importance" and said the strikes were intended "to undermine Saddam Hussein's ability to wage war. These are opening stages of what will be a broad and concerted campaign." He said the action was against "targets of military opportunity" in an operation to "disarm Iraq and to free its people."American messages were being broadcast on Iraqi airwaves, saying, "This is the day you have been waiting for," according to Al-Jazeera TV.

The airstrike came shortly after Bush's 48-hour ultimatum to Saddam to leave the country or face war expired. Saddam's time was up at 8 p.m. EST -- 4 a.m. Thursday in Baghdad, its population shrunken in recent days by an exodus of thousands of fearful residents. Not long after, White House chief of staff Andrew Card informed the president that intelligence officials had no information that Saddam had left Iraq, and Saddam's regime gave every appearance of digging in.

In the minutes after the deadline, Iraqi TV showed footage of a pro-Saddam march Tuesday in Baghdad, with members of the crowd chanting pro-Saddam slogans, some brandishing rifles and carrying pictures of Saddam. "We are dedicated to martyrdom in defense of Iraq under your leadership," a loyal Iraqi parliament assured the Iraqi dictator, and armed members of the ruling Baath party deployed behind hundreds of sandbagged defensive positions in Baghdad. Even so, 17 Iraqi soldiers surrendered to American GIs during the day, eager to give up before the shooting started.

Bush met periodically throughout the day with his top aides at the White House and sent formal notice to Congress that reliance on "further diplomatic and other peaceful means alone" would not suffice to counter "the continuing threat posed by Iraq." White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said the nation "ought to be prepared for the loss" of American lives once the military effort begins to depose Saddam and recover weapons of mass destruction.

Along with the coalition force approaching 300,000 troops massed in the Persian Gulf region were 1,000 combat aircraft and five aircraft carrier battle groups. The United States claims the public and private support of 45 other nations in the coalition to topple Saddam. But only Britain, with about 40,000 troops, was making a sizable contribution to the military force. In a run-up to war, U.S. aircraft also dropped nearly 2 million leaflets over southern Iraq with a variety of messages, including, for the first time, instructions to Iraqi troops on how to capitulate to avoid being killed. Hundreds of miles away, at an air base in England, crews loaded bombs aboard giant B-52 combat aircraft.

Apart from the desire to capture weapons of mass destruction, Bush's submission to Congress said a military attack could lead to the discovery of information that would allow the apprehension of terrorists living in the United States. An attack, it said, "is a vital part of the international war on terrorism." Despite deep divisions at the United Nations, Bush also claimed "the authority -- indeed, given the dangers involved, the duty -- to use force against Iraq to protect the security of the American people and to compel compliance with United Nations resolutions."

The diplomatic wheels turned still at the United Nations where foreign ministers were meeting in the Security Council at the request of the French and Germans, prominent critics of the American military operation. "This is a sad day for the United Nations," said the organization's secretary general, Kofi Annan said. "I know that millions of people around the world share this sense of disappointment and are deeply alarmed." Bush abandoned diplomacy on Monday, and administration officials blamed French intransigence for the lack of consensus on a new Security Council resolution that would have given Saddam an ultimatum.

On Wednesday, in an 11th-hour effort to avoid a war, Bahrain publicly offered exile to Saddam "in a dignified manner that should not be seen as undermining Iraq's position and capabilities."

"It's the last-hour chance and we hope that Iraq will accept this offer to avoid war," Information Minister Nabil al-Hamer said.

But Saadoon Hammadi, speaker of Iraq's parliament, dismissed the offer, saying exile was "absolutely unthinkable."

"He will be in front of everyone," Hammadi said of Saddam. "He will fight and guide our country to victory." :fuckyou:

Yes i know that, as i use IE6 at home... and IE5.5 here at work. It's just that cookies are fucked up here in IE, so i use mozilla which works good on nicely written sites *cough* like mine *cough*.

People that think that everything MSIE parses is good code deserves to die. I can make MSIE execute programs on you're pc as well, I doubt mozilla does this. (And yes, its possible to have a html page execute programs on YOURE pc, I saw it myself today, without the use of any dll and it shocked me that it was possible. (It was a feature in a cms).

Very nice. I did delete your active copy of the code as it was giving java errors, but Mozilla does not parse CSS correctlly if you use CSS to effect table borders it ends up looking like shit in Netscape. (Among other things)

The td does not affect the width of the textbox, you have to specify it yourself. It's not mozilla's fault that it refuses to parse bad code.

There is no other css item for the textbox except for this:

That one does not contain code to specify the width. In the html file we find:

Which makes the size 40 and the maxlength 85, size is used because that overrides the maxlength property and thus thy code is wrong.
Read about it here and fix the code.

Only thing MS IE is good for is for exploiting people with activeX and vbscript.

the code for the man text area is
